Have You Heard of Clubhouse?

What Is It?

According to Wikipedia, “Clubhouse is an invitation-only audio-chat social networking app launched in 2020 by software developers Alpha Exploration Co.” By invite-only, it doesn’t mean you have to be invited to listen to conversations - it means you have to be invited to even make an account. This invitation must come from an existing user, who only has two invites to give out. However, in this blog post from the creators of Clubhouse, they say they’d like to open up the app for everyone by the end of this year.

As of February 1, 2021, there are approximately two million users. Additionally, for now, it’s only available on iOS, but the company stated that an Android version of the application will soon be in the works.

It was able to rise to popularity during last year's quarantine. Celebrities such as Elon Musk can also contribute its increasing traction following an interview with the GOOD TIME club in January 2021. Additionally, he agreed to do a Clubhouse with Kanye West, and even requested a conversation with Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Is It A Good Fit For Businesses?

There is no 100% right answer to this question. However, due to the high level of exclusivity the app currently has, the answer for small businesses is: maybe not. Though you can reach new audiences, you’d be isolating your current audience. Unless you’re cross-posting, your already loyal clientele would most likely be unable to listen to your talks and conversations, which could be seen as quite off-putting. If you are cross-posting, there may not even be a point to having a Clubhouse account, as it loses the lure of exclusivity that it has.

Final Thoughts

Since most of us are unable to even make an account, Clubhouse shouldn’t even be on our radar. Though the creators of the app say they would like to make Clubhouse accessible to everyone, there’s no real promise that this would happen anytime soon. If or when this happens, Clubhouse might be a great marketing resource and fun, new avenue to experiment with both as a business and a customer or client. For now, the app may be unworthy of your most valuable investment, time.
